Whipped body butter and candle: the after bath ritual
We talk a lot about the bath and very little about what comes after. Yet that is often when the skin needs the most attention, and when the calm built up in the water risks evaporating along with the steam. The Selv after bath ritual comes down to two gestures: a whipped body butter applied to skin that is still slightly damp, and a candle left burning while you get dressed slowly. Here is how to do each one, and why they belong together.
Whipped body butter: what it is
A whipped body butter is a water-free treatment, made of plant butters and oils whipped until the texture turns airy. The Selv whipped body butters in the 120 ml size (Thé, Sud, VERBENA) are built on shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin E, with a fragrance of natural origin or essential oils. The NORDIQUE whipped body butter, in the 240 ml size, adds soybean butter and corn starch to that base, and it is scented only with lavender and eucalyptus essential oils.
The product pages describe a rich, soft, enveloping texture that melts on contact with the skin, made to nourish dry skin deeply without leaving a heavy finish. The Thé, Sud and VERBENA formulas are presented as 100% natural, with no synthetic fragrance, no parabens, no mineral oils and no silicones, and each of those pages describes the product as vegan. All of them are handmade in Quebec.
How to apply a whipped body butter
The gesture is simple, but the order matters.
- Take a small amount. A little goes a long way; whipped texture spreads much further than you would think.
- Warm it between your hands. The butter melts with the heat of your palms and becomes easier to spread.
- Apply it to clean skin. The product pages are specific: ideally while it is still slightly damp, after the bath or shower.
- Massage slowly until absorbed. Circular movements, without pressing. Take the time to breathe in the scent.
Why on damp skin
It is the advice that comes up on every Selv whipped body butter page: for a more enveloping feel, apply it after the shower or bath, while the skin is still slightly damp. The water left on the skin helps the butter spread in a thin layer, and the greasy feel fades faster. Pat the skin with the towel instead of drying it completely, then apply the butter within the next few minutes, before the bathroom cools down.
The dry areas to focus on
The whole body can take a whipped body butter, but some areas ask for it more than others:
- Legs and shins, usually the first to feel tight in winter.
- Elbows and knees.
- Arms and shoulders, especially after a hot bath.
- Feet and heels, spending a little longer on them.
For very dry or fragile spots, such as hands, cuticles or cracked heels, Selv offers a different product: Le Baume protecteur, a small 20 g size based on shea butter, beeswax, sweet almond and jojoba, scented with lavender essential oil. Use a small amount, as often as needed, on the areas that ask for more attention. The whipped body butter covers the body; the baume targets specific spots.
Which whipped body butter to choose
The choice comes down to scent, as it does for everything else here.
- Thé: pear on top, white tea at the heart, lavender at the base. Soft, elegant, understated. The one you reach for in the evening.
- Sud: coconut, monoi, vanilla bean. Warm sand and long summer days.
- VERBENA: lemon, verbena, lime, with lemon and lime essential oils. Bright, lightly zesty, made for the morning.
- NORDIQUE: eucalyptus, lavender, fresh green accords. The direct continuation of a bubble bath or a bath salt from the same range.
A useful rule: if you used a bath product from one range, a butter from the same range extends the scent without muddling it. For the bath itself, the natural bubble bath guide explains how to choose and how much to use.
The candle and its part in the ritual
The candle is not an accessory. It is the first thing you light and the last thing you blow out. The Selv product pages put it right at the start of the ritual: run a hot bath, light the candle, let the scent fill the room. After the bath, it is the only source of light while you apply the butter, and that is what keeps the return to everyday life from being too abrupt.
The Selv candles are poured in 100% natural soy wax with a cotton wick, and scented with essential oils or a fragrance of natural origin. They are presented as free of paraffin, synthetic fragrance and artificial colourants, in a reusable metal container with a lid, in a 6 oz (170 g) size, for a burn time of about 40 hours. Every product page describes them as vegan and not tested on animals, handmade in Quebec.
As for scent, they follow the ranges: QUARTZ (rose petals, fresh rose, soft floral accords), NORDIQUE (eucalyptus, lavender), LUV (peach), VERBENA (lemon, verbena, lime) and Boréal (fir). The simplest approach is to match the candle to the butter: Quartz with a floral treatment, Nordique with the butter of the same name, Verbena with the VERBENA butter.
Basic safety
The instructions on the Selv product pages are clear, and they hold for any candle:
- First use: let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the container before putting it out, so it burns evenly afterward.
- Before each lighting: trim the wick to about 5 mm.
- Never leave a lit candle unattended.
- Set it on a heat resistant surface, away from the edge of the tub where a wet hand could knock it over.
- Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
In the bathroom, keep the flame away from towels and curtains, and put it out before you leave the room, even for a few minutes.
The after bath ritual, in order
Here is the full sequence, as it takes shape when you put the product pages together:
- The candle has been lit since the start of the bath. Let it burn.
- Step out of the water and pat the skin, without drying it completely.
- Warm a small amount of whipped body butter between your hands.
- Massage slowly, starting with the legs, then the arms, the shoulders, the dry areas.
- Apply a little baume to hands, cuticles or heels if they need it.
- Put on a robe. Stay a few minutes in the candlelight before blowing it out.
It is that last gesture, blowing out the candle, that closes the ritual. It marks the end of a stretch of time that was yours.
Frequently asked questions
Should whipped body butter go on dry or damp skin?
On clean, slightly damp skin, after the bath or shower. That is the advice on the Selv product pages, for a more enveloping feel and an easier application.
What is the difference between a whipped body butter and a baume?
The whipped body butter covers the whole body with an airy texture. Le Baume protecteur is denser, comes in a small size, and targets hands, elbows, heels and cuticles. Unlike the whipped body butters, it contains beeswax.
How long does a Selv candle burn?
About 40 hours for the 6 oz (170 g) size, according to the product pages. Trimming the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting helps keep the burn even.
Can you leave a candle burning in the bathroom during the bath?
Yes, as long as you stay in the room, set it on a heat resistant surface and keep it away from anything that could catch fire. Put it out as soon as you leave the bathroom.
One last thing
The after bath is where the ritual turns into a habit. A whipped body butter on damp skin, a candle still burning for a while, and a few more minutes before going back to everything else. It is not much. That is exactly why it lasts.
