Natural bubble bath: the Selv guide to choosing it and using it well
There is a difference between running a bath and preparing one. The first takes two minutes and usually ends with a phone balanced on the edge of the tub. The second starts with a simple gesture: pouring a few capfuls of bubble bath under the hot running water, watching the foam build, and letting the room fill with a scent you chose. This guide explains how to get the most out of a natural bubble bath, which skin it suits, how to choose one, and how it fits into the Selv ritual.
What we mean by a natural bubble bath
A bubble bath is first of all a cleanser. It contains foaming agents, water, a moisturizing agent such as glycerin, preservatives and a fragrance. What sets a so-called natural formula apart is where those ingredients come from and how the product is scented.
At Selv, the full ingredient list (INCI nomenclature) is shown on every product page, in the "The Formula" section. So you can read exactly what you are pouring into the water. The NORDIQUE bubble bath, for example, combines a plant-derived cleansing agent, a plant-based foaming agent, glycerin of vegetable origin and a fragrance made of at least 50% essential oils. The Boréal bubble bath goes a little further: its formula is described as 100% natural and biodegradable, with no synthetic fragrance, scented only with pure balsam fir essential oil, and its product page presents it as vegan.
Keep this in mind: "natural" does not mean "nothing in it". Foam needs surfactants to exist. The useful question is where they come from and what comes with them.
How to use a bubble bath
Foam depends on three things: how much product you use, how hot the water is, and how strong the stream is. The gesture that works best is the same for all the Selv bubble baths: pour the bubble bath straight under the hot running water while the tub fills. The movement of the water does the work. Pour it into a tub that is already full and still, and you will get the scent but very little foam.
How much to pour
The Selv product pages give concrete benchmarks, and they vary from one formula to the next:
- NORDIQUE (lavender and eucalyptus): about 4 capfuls under the hot running water.
- Boréal (fir): about 6 capfuls, since its plant-based formula foams differently.
- Quartz (rose) and Luv (peach): a few pumps or a small amount, depending on how much foam you want.
Start with the amount listed, then adjust the next time. A deep tub or a weak stream sometimes calls for a little more. For an even more enveloping foam, add the product throughout the fill rather than all at once at the start.
Temperature and time
Hot water helps the foam build and releases the fragrance notes into the steam. Pick a comfortable heat, the kind you can step into without holding your breath. After that, the length is up to you. The Quartz bubble bath page puts it simply: enjoy your bath for as long as you like, and the formula is suitable for regular use.
Basic precautions
A bubble bath is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs. Stop using it if irritation appears. Keep the bottle out of reach of children, in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Which skin it suits
This is the question we get most often. Plenty of conventional bubble baths leave the skin feeling tight when you get out. Selv formulas were developed to respect the skin's natural balance, and the NORDIQUE, Boréal, Quartz and Luv product pages all state that they are suitable for sensitive skin.
Two details worth noting:
- The NORDIQUE and Luv formulas are designed to respect the skin's natural balance, including that of the external intimate area.
- The Quartz and Luv bubble baths are listed as safe during pregnancy. You will also find them in the selection for mothers to be.
If your skin is very dry, remember that a bubble bath is still a cleanser: it does not replace the care that comes after. Add a few drops of botanical oil to the water, or apply a whipped body butter to skin that is still slightly damp when you get out. Those steps are covered in the guide to bath salts and botanical oil.
How to choose your bubble bath
Once the question of the formula is settled, the choice comes down to scent. Each Selv range has its own signature, described in top, heart and base notes on the product page.
- NORDIQUE: eucalyptus on top, lavender at the heart, fresh green accords at the base. The scent of the spa, the one that drops your shoulders within the first few minutes.
- Boréal: fir needles, fresh conifers, resinous wood. A walk in the forest without leaving home.
- Quartz: fresh rose, rose petals, powdery floral accords. Soft, timeless, calming.
- Luv: fresh peach, peach nectar, soft velvety fruity accords. Indulgent without being sugary.
A good rule of thumb: pick the scent you would want to smell in the whole bathroom, not just in the water. The steam carries the notes well beyond the tub. If you are torn, the bubble bath collection shows all four side by side, each in a 475 ml size.
The Selv bubble bath ritual
Selv grew out of Sarah Laroche's love for the bath ritual and for a slower way of living, discovered over years of travel. The products are handmade in Quebec, in Montreal. The bubble bath is often the way into this ritual, because it asks for little and gives back a lot.
Here is the sequence the way we practise it at home:
- Close the door. Turn off the screens, or leave them in another room.
- Run the hot water and pour the bubble bath under the stream.
- While the tub fills, light a candle and let the foam spread across the water.
- Step in. Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths.
- Give yourself a few minutes where nobody needs anything from you.
The ritual extends easily. The Luv bubble bath page suggests adding a few drops of the botanical oil from the same range to the water for a more immersive experience, and the idea works for every range. If you want a complete ritual in a single box, the immersive kit brings together pink salt, dried flowers, a botanical oil and a floating candle in the same scent world.
Frequently asked questions
Does a natural bubble bath foam as much as a conventional one?
Yes, as long as you pour it under the hot running water while the tub fills. The Selv product pages describe a generous, delicate foam. Just adjust the amount, between 4 and 6 capfuls depending on the range.
Can you use a bubble bath every day?
The Quartz bubble bath is listed as suitable for regular use, and Selv formulas are designed to respect the skin's natural balance. Listen to your skin: if it feels tight, space out your baths or add a nourishing step afterward.
Can a bubble bath be used as a shower gel?
It does cleanse the skin, but it is formulated for bath water. Selv offers shower gels in the same ranges, better suited to the direct stream of a shower.
Which bubble bath should you choose during pregnancy?
The Quartz and Luv bubble baths are listed as safe during pregnancy on their product pages. If you have any doubt, the full INCI list is on every product page, so you can show it to a health professional.
One last thing
A natural bubble bath is a small choice that changes the whole experience: what you breathe in, what your skin feels, and the time you give yourself. Take the one whose scent sounds like you, pour it under the hot water, and let the rest happen on its own. A ritual is mostly repetition. Repeated gestures become rituals.
